There is a significant financial burden to obtain feminine hygiene products for many girls and women. Period poverty is a term used to describe someone who lacks access to menstrual hygiene products. The average woman spends around $18,000 in her lifetime on period products. While there are personal needs pantries and other homeless shelters that help provide for these items, because of the price, they are often running short or just do not have the supplies to hand out to women that need them.
The Girl Scout Gold Award Project: Her Essentials With Dignity, aims to help those women and girls who lack those necessary products. With help from the community, the goal is to collect tangible products, or purchase products through monetary donations. These products will then be distributed throughout the area, to local charities who help those in need. Additionally, educating the community on this issue, so they learn what period poverty is, how this is a real issue, and how to help is also part of the intended impact.
